# Jannis Koberg (CoMaE)

> Jannis Koberg (CoMaE): physics student at Kiel University and fullstack developer writing Rust, research software and simulations — hamster-animator, IGSN Helper, TAP and more.

Hey! I'm a physics student in Kiel who writes research software, from radiative transfer animations to research data pipelines. Coding since 2020 in Python, C and Rust, and just as at home crafting polished frontends.

Real name Jannis Koberg, known online as CoMaE. Roles: Physics Student, Research Software Developer, Simulation Builder, Fullstack Developer. Based in Kiel, Germany.

## Now

- Student Research Assistant at DAPHNE4NFDI — AG Murphy, CAU Kiel (since Aug 2026)
- Physics Student — Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel (since Oct 2025)
- Junior Developer at BEYONDIT GmbH — Kiel (since Jul 2024)

## Research & university work

- hamster-animator (AG Wolf, CAU Kiel): Turns radiative transfer simulations of protoplanetary disks into animations: camera flights, polarimetry, runs locally or on SLURM. Tech: Python, Radiative Transfer, SLURM, ffmpeg, Astrophysics. Code available on request (HAMSTER is not yet public).
- [IGSN Helper](https://github.com/C0MaE/igsn_helper) (DAPHNE4NFDI): Drafts IGSN sample metadata from free-text lab submissions with a local LLM, checking every value against the source. Tech: Python, Ollama, Pydantic, pdfplumber, DataCite, ORCID / ROR.

## Projects

- [TAP – Tournament Manager](https://tap.comae.dev): Tournament platform for esports communities: brackets, leagues, map veto and live scoring, with a player app and a Discord bot. Tech: Rust, Actix-web, PostgreSQL, Next.js, React Native, SvelteKit, Docker.
- [N-Body Problem Simulation](https://nbody.comae.dev): Solar system simulation in C with a Velocity Verlet integrator, explorable in a Three.js web viewer. Tech: C, OpenMP, CMake, Python, Three.js. Source: https://github.com/C0MaE/n-body-problem
- [Print Center](https://github.com/C0MaE/cups-ui): A CUPS-backed print center for Linux: print, manage the queue, scan and check supplies from the browser. Tech: Python, CUPS, SANE, Linux, JavaScript.
- [Fablesheet](https://fablesheet.github.io/fablesheet/): Offline-first character manager for pen & paper RPGs: full SRD 5e rules and sheet templates for any other game, on the desktop and as a web app. Tech: Rust, Tauri, React, TypeScript, SQLite. Source: https://github.com/fablesheet
- [McLookup](https://github.com/C0MaE/McLookup): A small Kotlin library for looking up Minecraft player data. Tech: Kotlin, Gradle.
- [JDA Command Manager](https://github.com/C0MaE/JDACommandManager): A minimal, fast command manager for JDA, the Java Discord API. Tech: Kotlin, Discord, JDA.

## Journey

- Aug 2026 – present: Student Research Assistant at DAPHNE4NFDI, AG Murphy, CAU Kiel. Joined the DAPHNE4NFDI consortium, building research data tools for photon and neutron science — like automating IGSN sample registration so lab samples get persistent identifiers.
- May 2026 – Oct 2026: Research Internship in Astrophysics, AG Wolf, CAU Kiel. Worked with Monte Carlo radiative transfer simulations of protoplanetary disks (HAMSTER) and built hamster-animator, which turns them into camera flights and polarization maps and runs on the group's SLURM cluster.
- Oct 2025 – present: Physics Student, Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel. Studying physics at CAU Kiel, bridging the gap between scientific thinking and software — simulations, data analysis, and everything in between.
- Jun 2025: High School Graduation (Abitur), Northern Germany. Finished school with advanced courses in mathematics and physics.
- Jul 2024 – present: Junior Developer at BEYONDIT GmbH, Kiel. Started my first professional role as a developer, working on real-world fullstack projects in a team environment.
- Jan 2024: First Open Source Project, GitHub. Built a fullstack tournament management app in Rust and React — my first real dive into both the language and open source.
- May 2020: First Line of Code, Home. Got into programming through Java — starting with a Minecraft server. That rabbit hole never really ended.
